I am not a Disney person. I am, however, a FF person. So when I heard about this game to start with I was not pleased. It sounded a lot like sacrelige to me. But then it came out, I played it, and what do you know, most of it was pretty good. The characters were interesting, both from Disney and S-E, and the boss fights were surprisingly and gratifyingly tough.
Graphics were also really good, and music was excellent- especially the theme song!
I have never really been a fan of uncontrollable party members, and this did turn out to be one of my least favorite aspects of the game. Lots of time was spent yelling "Goofy, you dumb*ss! Heal yourself! I know you have a potion! Aaaargh!" or various similar epithets.
But, the game starts out with a bang, the very first Disney level being a very impressive and fun to play Wonderland, complete with the Queen of Hearts, White Rabbit, Alice, Card Men, and of course the Cheshire cat. Each successive Disney-inspired environment is visually impressive, as well as authentic to the feel of the film being referenced.
Camera angle was frustrating to say the least, and was another cause of my berating the screen. It seemed like at times it was too sensitive to movement, and then at others it just got hung up and stayed there. Also, the perspective seemed too close, so you lost track of enemies, especially when there were lots of them (which there usually were).
Another frustration was with the incidental battles. Fighting the same little blue/black dudes over and over and over was really boring after a while! After a certain point I just ran away from anything I could, but often that was not an option. Boss battles, though, were lots of fun, just hard enough to be entertaining, not so hard as to be frustrating.
I never did really figure out the Gummi Ship deal, and it really didn't appeal to me at all. There was plenty of stuff to do in this game without adding such a random aspect. Especially considering you get where you are going anyway, just in the original Gummi Ship, this just seemed like a waste of time. Flying in general was the second most boring part of the game, after slogging your way through hundreds of tiny bad guys just to cross Traverse Town.
After all the problems I had with this game, and all the cursing at my TV, when it was over, I kind of missed it. This is not a perfect game, but it is really fun to play, and I probably will end up replaying it. There was just too much great stuff going on here not to.
