Since receiving my GBA as a birthday gift, I have been searching for games that I actually enjoy playing on it for longer than 20 minutes or so. Maybe I'm just getting old, but few games I have found for the GBA are worth the eye fatigue I get from squinting at that tiny little screen! When I got Minish Cap, I played it for hours on end, only stopping when I had to go to work, or for frivolous things like eating or sleeping.
There are plenty of things that Zelda fans will appreciate, such as the sound effects accompanying characters' speech, the dungeon set-up, and the presence of a "partner." In this case, the partner is enjoyably bizarre, being a hat with a duck face(!).
There are also a couple interesting new ideas in the game, the main one being the issue of size. Link can shrink down to itty bitty flea size to get into tiny little holes, walk up and down tiny little ladders, and talk to tiny little people. This little trick never got old, and lent a new depth to the game, as you walked around looking at everything from both size perspectives, planning how to get places and what size you need to be to get there.
Another cool part of the game was the ability to make more Links by standing on certain floor panels. This was necessary at times to step on certain switches simultaneously, and added some interesting spatial puzzles and a really cool boss fight.
Although this game was lots of fun, after I beat it I had no desire to replay it. Maybe that will change as time goes on, but for right now, there is little replay value to this game for me. Still, it was definitely worth the purchase price, as it kept me entertained throughout the game.
