Well this game is definitely in the category of sleeper hit. It's a great game that's basically a final fantasy meets resident evil. And considering no game ever did that before or since, I'd say square did a pretty good job. Too bad for this game though, because this was the game square released after Final Fantasy 7, which made it impossible to live up to its own standards. But if you look at this game and compare it to the majority of games that came out at that time, this is definitely one of the better ones.
The game is based off a book, which had a pretty good story. It's an odd story, which doesn't give you too much information too fast. It's not until the last day or two of the game that you finally start understanding everything. Without giving much away, you play as a cop who lost her mother and sister at a young age in a car accident. And there's a mysterious lady who calls herself Eve, who has the power to set people on fire. But for some reason, you're immune to her powers. It's your job to find out why, and take Eve down in the process.
The graphics are amazing, well the FMV's are anyways. The FMV's are definitely some of the best on the playstation, especially the ones at the end.
One thing that kills the game though is that there are no voice overs. Which really takes you out of the game. Sometimes a game can get away with that(FF7), but this game greatly suffers from no sound. And the FMV's could have been much greater with some talking in there. The music on the other hand is pretty good, it's sorta repetitive, but never to the point where you're muting the tv.
The gameplay isn't bad. It's not a turn based RPG, in that the battles take place in real time, but it still freezes to cast spells. The battle system works though, it's simple, but not too easy. Although there's a good chance you could go through the whole game without dying, except for the final boss, who's pretty tough. And the rest of the enemies are pretty cool too. You don't get stuck fighting the same ones over and over, since each area has its own enemies. But they usually only have 1 to 2 moves each, and once you figure them out, they get really easy to defeat.
And this is an RPG, and yet you can finish in roughly 10 hours on your first try, and I mean without rushing through.
Overall this is a great game that many people have overlooked. It has its flaws, but they never overshadow the great qualities this game has.
