There are very few games I would consider to epiomize perfection. Chrono Trigger is one of those games. Even now, 10 years after its release, I still find myself revisiting the game every so often.
Players are thrust into the position of being controlled by Crono, a crazy-haired boy from 1000AD. I say controlled by Crono, since his destiny can never be altered no matter how hard the player tries.
The game takes players to the dawn of man, who have begun to out-evolve the reptiles, to the future to see what becomes of civilization, to the end of time to see how life will finally end.
As far as role playing games go, this is definately what others should aspire for. The game has the perfect combination of characters and explores most of their motivations (though one could argue both Marle and Crono aren't as explored, Crono speaks more through the players actions than words).
The music by Yasunori Mitsuda (and some by Final Fantasy great Nobuo Uematsu)is a blend of techno jazz to blaring fanfares to soothing melodies.
Akira Toriyama's character designs work well for this fantasy world, expressing ranges of emotions for each character.
This is a game any RPG developer should aspire to be. I myself would argue that no other game has surpassed Chrono Trigger. There have been others that have come close, but have never hit that perfect mix of character, graphics, music, and story.
