The original Doom games were fantastic. They still are - if a little ugly looking. Well here comes Doom 3 to bring the series well and truly into the twenty first century. With fancy new graphics, creepy sounds, and a few tweaks and changes here and there with the gameplay, can this be as exciting to new players today as the originals were back then? The answer is, "yes it flipping well can".
First things first though. You must play this in a darkened room with the sound turned up. This game is meant to scare and so why not help it to do so? Well… when I say scare, what I mean is, make you jump out of your skin quite regularly. It's not really all that scary but it can be very butt clenchingly tense. So when something suddenly goes BANG or leaps out at you from nowhere, your heart rate will reach astronomical levels and so will your bowel movements.
The creatures in this game are pretty impressive and it was nice to see the old flame-bolt throwing demons from the original games back in this one, (they look different now but do the same job as before). There are also some nice big beastly looking hound-of-hell type things as well.
Weapons are obviously a key part of this game and there is is decent enough selection to find. There's just one problem though. You can't shine your torch and fire your gun at the same time, which seems like a stupid omission by the game's creators. Never mind. Using these weapons does create the desired effect though. The things are killed, and the blood goes all over the place. Not to the same degree as "The Suffering" but still enough to justify the games adult rating.
The only big problem I had with the game was that once I had killed the beasties in one area and reached a point where I couldn't see where to go next, I found myself wandering around in circles for ages getting a little bit bored.
Still, it is a very good game, and deserves to be bought by anyone who has plenty of spare clean underwear.
