Colin McRae rally games just keep on turning up. Why should you pay yet more (hard earned?) cash for a re-hash of each of the previous versions? Is it worth it?
This release follows the same formula as before. You race around courses trying frantically not to crash. If you have played any of the previous games you'll know what the car handling is like in these games. If you haven't played a McRae game before you are in for a shock. For a start, you will need at least an analogue control pad and preferably a steering wheel. If you try to get around using just the keyboard or a standard control pad, you will not win any races. In fact you probably won't even make it to the end of the course, having left various parts of your car attached to trees or in ditches.
There are also plenty of things to tinker around with in the car settings area. However, this is very awkward to get right and it may take a lot of trial runs before you get the hang of exactly what settings are required for each type of racing conditions. The slightest minuscule error in choice can mean the difference between victory and a car that is better of being sold as scrap.
One good thing about this game is the ability to create your own championship out of whichever tracks you want. If you get bored of the pre built in ones, just make a new one. And the racing can be very rewarding when you finally win some races. However, it will take a while to get there.
Where this game fails slightly is in its graphics. The cars look a bit angular for my liking and the cardboard cut-out spectators just look rubbish. The sound is good enough but there really isn't much in the line of sound to get wrong though.
It's biggest flaw though is in its unforgiving difficulty level. It is just too tricky for novices to stand much of a chance of winning many races.
