Sonic the Hedgehog has never been one of my favourite games. However, I've still played a few of them, each time thinking that there must be something that I am missing. Otherwise why has the little blue spikey thing become so successful. Each time though I am a little disappointed and give in playing after a few levels.
Sonic Heroes is the first 3D version that I have played and is the one that has finally nailed down the coffin lid on Sonic games for me. Never again do I wish to be subjected to such utter rubbish.
The game developers have tried to introduce new elements into the game style. However, it doesn't balance out the problems in the rest of the game. The idea in this release is that you control three characters, each with it's own ability that will be required at various points. These would be easy to control if it wasn't for the appalling controls. The control instructions pop up on screen as you progress, but it says "press button X" or "press button A". Most control pads are going to have different button ID's to this and so it just becomes extremely irritating.
Once you have managed to just about get used to the controls you begin to realise that Sonic Heroes is… (how can I say it so that this will be printed?)… a complete and utter sack of ____ (fill in the blank with whatever undesirable waste product you can think of). The 3D aspect is a waste of time because you end up following a set path for 95% of the time, and the graphics are extremely outdated. The sound is pretty bad as well. You'd think that updating an old game would include updating the music but no, it has that god-awful 80's guitar tripe that all the other Sonic games use.
This game is terrible and it's about time that Sonic was put into retirement in the old games home along with pac-old-man and not-so-manic-anymore-miner.
