What with all the hype surrounding Ridge Racer saying how amazing it was I went out and bought it thinking it would be a necessary addition to my games collection. I learned a lesson in doing so. Just because everybody says something is brilliant it doesn't mean that it is.
Sure it looks good, with great graphics, and it sounds good with some decent tunes to listen to and nice sound effects. And yes, it does grab you by your bits and pieces shouting "I am fantastic!" in your face with its immediate playability. But after unlocking a few tracks and faster cars I found myself wondering what else there was to keep my attention. You race. You unlock a track. You unlock a new car. You race. You unlock a faster car. You race some more. For me, it just got too monotonous. There wasn't the adrenaline inducing excitement of Burnout Legends or Wipeout Pure. Nor was there the skill required of TOCA Race Driver 2. But, more importantly for me, there was not enough variety, which is in all of the other three mentioned games.
It's a shame but Ridge Racer, whilst being a very good game, was a bit of a disappointment after all the hype. It's grabbed my attention but struggled to keep hold of it.
