Before I go any further I'll just say that Wipeout Pure is quite possibly the best Wipeout game that I have played. Even though it is on a portable games system.
It sticks to the same tried, tested and successful method of futuristic gravity defying hover-ships flying at breakneck speeds around a variety of impressive tracks whilst trying to blow up your opponents with various weapons. There is a selection of ships to choose from with differing top speeds, acceleration etc… and as you progress you will gradually open up faster leagues up to the point where it is almost impossible to obtain the much sought after "perfect lap" message on the screen.
At first though there is only a handful of tracks and ships compared to other racing games. However, if you have access to the wonder that is the world-wide-web, (which if you are reading this, you should have), you can download loads of extra tracks, ships, screen skins and music. Some of these are much better than the ones that come on the UMD as well, so it's well worth downloading them, (as long as you have a memory card bigger than the rubbish 32mb one that comes with the console).
Another excellent addition, which is unique to Wipeout Pure, is the "zone" game mode. In this you just steer your ship around special tracks whilst the ship gets gradually faster and faster. Eventually you will blow up from hitting the sides of the track. The idea is just to last as long as possible. Simple idea. Excellent game mode.
Graphically this game is stunning as well. I am yet to notice any slow down, stuttering or glitches anywhere, even when it gets up to full speed or when all the other ships are on screen as well. The music is of the same high standard that this series of games has become renowned for. The controls are easy to use, (although the analogue nub is not as good as the d-pad).
The only thing I think could be improved is that some different weapons should be brought in. I think that they are the same weapons as were used way back in Wipeout 2097 on the PSone. But, apart from that minor thing, this is a must have game for PSP owners who are speed freaks.
