Having never played any Burnout game I was unsure about getting this one. However, it got good reviews, and the idea of being the police in a high speed chase won me over. And I'm glad it did. This is one of the best racing games I have played on any system. It has it all. Speed, excitement, crashes, great graphics, great soundtrack, a decent variety of game modes, and an excellent difficulty curve.
Firstly, this is different to most racers in that crashing into other cars can be helpful. You can choose whether to race other cars to the finish line by bashing them off the road or by trying not to crash into anything at all. Either way is just as excellent as the other.
In 'road rage' mode crashing becomes a necessity. This could well be the most fun you will get in a racing game. Try to ram as many cars off the road as you can before your own car is written off. Brilliant!
'Pursuit' does exactly what it says on the tin. You chase another car in your police car with sirens wailing. If you hit them enough their energy bar will disappear and you have won. Great fun!
There's also plenty of hidden things to unlock. New faster classes, cars and new tracks are the main things, but there's also plenty of stuff that takes a bit of practice and a bit of luck. Forcing opponents to crash at specific places, causing certain amounts of damage in 'crash' mode, ramming set numbers of cars in a single race… load of stuff.
The only thing I fond was that on the fastest two classes it was often impossible to see what was coming towards you in the oncoming traffic until you had managed to destroy your car by hitting it. But this is a minor point which I wouldn't consider as being a problem as such… more an unfortunate part of driving at break neck speeds.
If you even only mildly like racing games go out and buy this game. You will not be disappointed at all.
