Call of Duty is, in my opinion, the best war based shooter on the PC. It managed to edge past Medal of Honour - Allied Assault by being that little bit more atmospheric. Call of Duty 2 is here now though.
You all know the score. You run around shooting Nazi's at the same time as trying not to get shot by Nazi's. It's a simple formula that works extremely well. Along the way there are a few little missions to carry out, such as planting explosives on tanks, field guns, storage depots etc... It's pretty much what you had to do in the original game. Also, as in the original, you play the parts of three soldiers. One is Russian, one English, and one American.
So if everything is just the same as before, why bother with this one? Gameplay is the answer to that one. Both games are fantastic fun to play. The atmosphere built up as you play is great. Squad members shout all around you, shells explode all over the place sending men flying through the air in a cloud of dust, and Nazi's appear from all around keeping you on your toes at all times. Bullets fly all over the place and if you are not careful, you will get hit by lots of them. Which leads me on to the one change that has been made. You no longer collect medi-kits to restore health. Nor do you have a health bar. Instead you just run for cover and sit and wait a few seconds to recover some health. In a way this is better than being able to completely recover by picking up a health pack, but being some sort of super-self-healing soldier still isn't a perfect solution.
So, does this supersede the original as top dog of its genre? Well, it makes a solid attempt but doesn't quite overtake it. Instead it is just better looking than the original but not really a better game for it. It's still a fantastic game though.
