I love racing games. And the PSP has got a pretty decent selection to choose from. Colin McRae Rally 2005 has got some serious competition overall with the likes of Wipeout Pure and Burnout Legends. However if you're only interested in rally racing there's not much out there.
That's a shame really because this games is… well, erm… it's crap.
No, that's a bit harsh really. It's actually… erm… nope, I was right the first time, it is actually crap.
I've played and liked a few Colin McRae games on other systems and yet I struggled to enjoy a single moment of playing this game. It just didn't feel anywhere near as good as my previous experiences. For a start the controls are not that good. The analogue is easier to use than the d-pad but is still rubbish. It's far from easy to turn just a little bit. Instead you end up sliding around all over the place because the car turns too far and then you have to compensate by turning the other way and then back again. Other systems are much easier to control with the better analogue controllers.
Graphically it is pretty good although more car damage and mud splatter would have made it look even better. The sound is pretty average with engine noise and co-driver instructions - no much to get wrong really. And there are enough game modes to keep you busy. The controls really let it down though. The let it down to the point where I could not bear to play it any longer and traded it in for something else. Let's hope that if a sequel is ever done the controls are sorted out. If they are it would be a great game.
