Grand Theft Auto on a portable games system? Surely not. They wouldn't be able to fit it all onto one of those little UMD's would they? Well… it would seem that they can, and with very few compromises. This game is fantastic and sets a high standard for other games developers to keep up with.
I'm astounded by how much Rockstar have managed to cram in. There are dozens of missions, loads of odd jobs and mini-games, piles of stunts and jumps to attempt, plenty of hidden secrets, as well as heaps of stuff just to look at and admire.
The missions are varied enough to not be monotonous. Some involve driving from one place to another, whilst others involve scaring or killing someone, and others involve huge shoot-outs. Even those that are similar feel different due to the story behind them and the differing areas where they take place.
The graphics are crisp, clear and never slow down or stutter. The sound is great with little background noises and a fairly decent soundtrack to listen to. And the only loading pauses are when you travel between the three islands or attempt one of the missions.
It's not as big a game as San Andreas or Vice City and a quite a few people have even complained that it is just a re-hash of GTA 3. What you've got to remember though is that this is the "first" GTA game on a "portable" gaming system. If this is what they can manage to do first time around what will they manage next time? (Apparently Rockstar have announced an "all new" GTA game for the PSP.)
Beware though, this game is for grown ups only and for good reason too. The bad language is bad, the sexual references are explicit, the violence very violent, and the body count quickly reaches high numbers. But, that's what we have come to expect from GTA games. That's the key word there… "games". It is only a game after all, and an excellent one at that.
