Ever since Medal of Honour became a surprise hit on the PlayStation war based first person shooters have been among some of the most eagerly awaited games to be released on any format… PC included. If anything, they are better on the PC due to the fact that you use a mouse making movement and aiming easier. Vietcong 2 hopes to be high up in the ranks of fps games. Unfortunately, it's not going to be.
The idea of fighting in the Vietnam War sounds great. It's a welcome change from the World War II and Middle East war games. And it would be great if the game didn't let itself down with various gameplay and technical glitches. For a start, it doesn't look very good. There are some fantastic looking games around now but Vietcong 2 looks like something that was released a few years ago. That could almost be forgiven if it ran smoothly, but, even on a fairly quick PC, with the graphics options turned down, it stuttered along rather irritatingly.
Secondly, this game is too unforgiving. You could say it is more realistic in that when you get shot your health goes down quickly instead of being able to take loads of bullets before collapsing in a bloody heap. But coupled with the stuttering along, it just makes the game extremely annoying. Trying to aim at an enemy soldier who is shooting at you is not easy when the screen jerks about. By the time I had shot one soldier my health was so low that I had no chance of getting the next one before he got me.
This could be a really good game, but you would need to be playing it on a very fast PC to be able to enjoy it. Instead I just found it to be frustrating and gave in after a few levels.
