Zoo tycoon was good enough to justify releasing a sequel. Zoo Tycoon 2 has obviously done well enough to justify releasing an expansion pack. So, along comes Endangered Species, but does it provide enough, or is Zoo Tycoon 2 going to become extinct?
Obviously, the idea in this game is to build and run successful zoos, and with ZY2-ES you are given a few new animals to add to them. The clue is in the title as to what animals you get. They are animals that have dwindling populations and even risk becoming extinct. It's your job to give them a happy home. Hopefully they will be so happy that they will make their species slightly less endangered by making babies. However, these animals are more difficult to look after. Their enclosures need to be pretty close to perfect if you are to get babies from them.
Other big additions include the ability to create raised walkways, jeep rides and sky rides. These allow visitors get a closer look at all your amazing exhibits and make the whole thing look much better. The sky rides can go through tree areas to get a better look at things like monkeys and birds; walkways can go over exhibits to be able to see crocodiles possibly; and jeep rides could maybe go through big open enclosures to look at giraffes or zebras. More importantly though, the little people will pay more money to be able to do this. Well, as long as you are managing to run your zoo efficiently, and the animals are being kept well.
To help you manage things and set up enclosures the zookeeper will assist you in selecting the correct items for each animal. The rest is down to your imagination. Various tools allow alterations to be made to the land, including adding trenches, hills, ponds, plants, trees, and buildings. It still requires a lot of patience, but patient people could be rewarded with some spectacular animal enclosures.
The problem remains that it is just a zoo. Zoos are quiet and pretty. If you want excitement you won't get it, (the lions still won't eat the zebras if you put them in the same enclosure). Don't get me wrong, ZT 2 is still a good game. There's loads of stuff to do and keep track of once you've done it. If you liked ZT 2 you should like this. However, I'm not really sure if there is enough 'extra' content to justify actually going out and buying it.
