Ultimate Ghost's n Goblin's carry's on the tradition of this series of games. In other words… IT'S CHUFFING DIFFICULT.
You control Arthur the knight on a quest to rescue some princess that's gone and got herself kidnapped by some evil nasty thing. Along the way you kill hoards of monsters that can come at you from all angles. And there are loads of the things. They can just appear from nowhere and home in on you. They even sometimes appear just when you are jumping and hitting them is unavoidable. Most of the time you should be able to hit them with whichever weapon you have though. Some of these are pretty good, like the daggers, lance and homing-anchor type thing, whilst others are a bit crap, like the whip and most bombs. You also have magic to use and different spells can be picked up along the way. Witches also provide you with new stuff once you have collected the necessary ingredients.
Whilst I have enjoyed this version more than previous versions, (going right back to the Spectrum 48K way back in the late 1980's), I still ended up getting too fed up of battling against the incredibly high level of difficulty and switched the game off permanently. "Why did I get it in the first place?" you may ask. Well, I had read that this version has an easy level for new comers and people who are not super human. This novice level is easier than the Normal and Ultimate levels but it's still difficult, (or I think so anyway). It just takes more hits for Arthur to lose his armour and you don't have to go to the beginning of the level each time you die. Normal level is slightly more tricky though and Ultimate level is just plain ridiculous. Hardly anyone will find Ultimate level enjoyable at all.
This is still a 2D side scroller game but the graphics in this game have been given a boost with 3D characters flying about and slight depth given to the backgrounds. The sound is reasonable but, as is normally the case the PSP games, becomes really good with some decent headphones.
So, really it's pretty much the same as before but much better looking and with a couple of new things thrown in. Whooop-dee-doo! I was fairly disappointed and I'm sure that plenty of other people will be too. Average players (like me) may squeeze a bit of fun out of it but only the die-hard GnG fans will get serious long term enjoyment out of this one.
