Apparently the two Power Stone games were a big hit on the Sega Dreamcast console a few years ago.  So much so that they seem to have a bit of a cult fan base.  Well that fan base can now enjoy them all over again as they have been bundled together on one disc for the Sony PSP.
These games involve scrapping against opponents with the aim of being the last man, (or woman), standing.  Where this game differs from most fighting games though is in the playing area.  Instead of a flat empty area to fight in you are presented with huge platformed arenas where you can leap around.  In these arenas there are also loads of items that can be used to help beat your opponents to a pulp.  Items include things such as guns, hammers, grenades and flame throwers as well as fixtures such as poles that can be swung around to kick even harder or giant gun turrets to shoot from.  There are also crates that can be smashed with the hope of finding powerstones.  If you manage to collect three of these you gain super abilities that can be devastating to your foes.
The second game of the two is definitely the best.  It has bigger and better arenas and also boasts a shop where you can buy extra items to use in your battles.  Whatever you buy or collect in the levels can also be mixed together to create new items with more impressive attributes.  It all goes towards making the game a little bit more involved than just beating people up.
One thing that I liked about this game was the fast pace of the action.  Once the fighting starts it's none stop relentless action all the way until someone has run out of energy.  You'll be glad of getting a bit of a break for your thumbs.
Graphically the game looks like an old game.  That's not to say that it looks awful though.  It just looks old.  It has bright cartoony graphics which are usually very clear, but sometimes your character can end up being a tiny blob as the view point zooms away to show the full arena.  The sound is OK with plenty of grunts, bangs and whooshes that suit the cartoon style.
This is a great game but it may not be very long lasting.  Playing single player is not enough to want to keep on playing.  It's the multiplayer modes where this game will be most fun.
