I really don't understand why this game has so much hype around it.
I've been playing it for a few days now. The graphics are very pretty I agree, but the character models look like plastic. I don't think realism works very well in a fantasy setting.
The whole thing seems to be a hack and slash dungeon crawl. You can choose whatever dungeon you like, is the scope of the free form gameplay. You can wander around all you like and beef up your stats.
I tried playing an archer rogue type class, but it is far far harder then playing a fighter. There are no hireable henchmen to help you out, so playing a support class really makes no sense.
Whatever class you play I'm sure you can end up very powerful, but so do the foes.
As a small gripe, I find the camera being trapped directly behind your character (unless in first person mode) very limiting. If I'm looking so pretty, I'd like to see it.
I honestly had more fun playing dungeon siege then this game. Even with the ability to jump to towns, you spend way too much time running.
But worst of all, I'm finding it very very dificult to care at all about the story.
It seems far too removed from my character, people trust me far too easily. It says to me "welcome to the game, look you're a hero! aren't you fantastic. By the way, the fate of the universe lays in your hands".
I think the voice acting was exagerated, whilst some of it is quite good, a fair bit of it makes you want to kill them. The nobles are unbearably pompous, the king's voice was the most annoying for me (luckily he dies in the 'prelude').
All accents sound very put on. I'm not sure exactly, but it sounds like they were trying for a variety of brit accents (maybe because in the US a fatasy setting is associated with them). Unfortunately they sound like fake brittish accents. I found myself skipping the dialogue preferring to read it instead of put up with their slow silly speach.
This game is definitly not perfect. If you need an rpg to keep you going I recommend it, but it has the same flaws as every unengaging rpg. It's graphics are pretty, but the character models are over realistic, the are simply too shiny. They really do look like plastic masks.
This game just makes me more desperate for Neverwinter Nights 2 to come out.
If anything this game serves as an example of perfect marketing. Their nothing information and rabid fanbase seem to have raised it on a pedastal, out of reach. After playing this game the reviews I've read really suprise me. It makes me wonder when the last time they played a "really" good rpg was.
It definitely had good points, but the bad far outweight them for me. I can sum it up by saying everything that I do in this game somehow gets made to feel like work. Not fun..
