Resident Evil 4 is an insanely fun game. I can't stop playing it!! I have almost beat it the second time through, and I still play it almost every day.
The gameplay is perfect. Controls are quick, responsive, intelligent, efficient. Very easy to pick up right from the start, but complex enough to require mastery for some of the side quests and conserving ammo.
The story and the treatment of Ashley are the only down-sides to this game. The story (though I liked it) is a little far-fetched and kind of silly. I wish the dialogue was as cool as Metal Gear Solid 3, but it's not.
Now about Ashley. I don't think that the treatment of women in games should be this ridiculous at this point. It's funny that you can try and look up her skirt, but come on, why not make her cool instead of so sexualized and meek.
The sound in this game is f***ing brilliant! I love the fact that everyone but the main characters speak in spanish. This made the creepiness factor sky-rocket for me. Mostly because I only know pequito spanish. The weapon sound effects, ka-blamawesome! The music is nice and eerie, but also telling of whether any more baddies are around.
I think the graphics are astounding. Creepy, gag-inducing backgrounds throughout. I mean, if the backgrounds include a villager "stapled" to the wall by a pitchfork...does it get more horrifying? Or how about a dumpster you can open, who's contents include and bag that flips around madly and stops when you fire at it or stab it...you never find out what was in the bag...it still haunts me...
anyway. this game rocks. But if you're a feminist, then you're going to hate ashley. Or if you're girlfriend is a feminist, then she'll make you hate ashley by her constant disgust with this character.
