Not owning an Xbox of my own, I didn't get to enjoy the entire Halo experience until swapping systems with a friend. My conclusion is that Halo is definitely a good game that is worth playing, especially for fans of the genre, but I don't really see what all that fuss was about.
The gameplay is about as solid as any I've seen on a console shooter. The controls are easy to get used to; no complaints here. The integration of vehicles into the game is a very welcome touch and helps to diversify the experience. The Graphics are excellent and the nicely rendered environments add to the atmosphere of the game. The storyline is fairly strong, although not terribly original. It is reminiscent of Starship Troopers or something along those lines. It carries the game through to the end effectively enough for a first-person shooter.
Halo, unfortunately, is a very short game and may leave you wanting more. My biggest complaint, however, would have to be the constant recycling of environments. You often find yourself going through multiple levels or sections of a complex that all look the same. On top of that, you are often required to revisit these areas and on many occasions I found myself getting bored and hoping the level would end or at least change a little.
I also found the enemies and fellow marines to be a bit inept at times, but the Heroic level of difficulty does provide a decent challenge. The little Covenant soldiers seem a bit out of place. You almost want to grab one of them to take home as a pet, but instead you end up dealing a fatal blow to the back of its head with the butt of your weapon.
The weapons are pretty average. I found the assault rifle to be very lacking in strength and accuracy. There are better assault rifles existing now. Surely the marines of the future wouldn't be sporting rifles that seem about as effective as micro-uzis. All that said, Halo is a good game overall. While not really groundbreaking or breathtaking, it is definitely worth playing and most will probably want to own it as well. It is hard to picture a complete xbox library without this title.
