The Grand Theft Auto series has gone a long way since its first appearance on the Playstation 2, and now Grand Theft Auto is back for the PSP in Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories. The game is similar to Grand Theft Auto 3 in a number of ways. It takes place in Liberty City three years before Grand Theft Auto set in 1998. Toni Cipriani returns to Liberty City after gone for a while. The game can be compared to GTA III as a port, even though it's really not since its storyline is different and it has other additions to it such as the addition of motorcycles.
The gameplay is your typical GTA gameplay. As you control a character that is able to use weapons, fight, steal cars, and just cause chaos. The story in the game is just like all other modern GTA games. It has a main plot that leads you all over the three islands, plus a lot of mini-games and hidden packages that can be found and collected. But of course you are free to roam the city and do almost anything you want.
The story puts you as the role of Toni Cipriani, a member of the Leone. The story is mostly aimed at getting back at the rival gang, the Sindaccos. Put there are some inside fights and arguments that you eventually take care of. As you start out the game you work for a Leone member named Vincenzo. As the story turns you start working for other people for different reasons. You end up noticing that what you do in the storyline affects everything around you including the town and other gangs. You'll find yourself getting attacked by a rival gang after killing several of them in a mission.
The radio is a huge part of the game. It's a huge part of the GTA games since GTA III. You'll find the station from GTA III. They have many songs created for the game and also some licensed music. But the licensed music isn't all that great, not like the selection of licensed music found in Vice City. The talk stations have are fun to listen, but it isn't a long time until the stations repeat themselves in the cycle and start all over. Its one of those things done to size it down on the PSP.
There's also a feature called custom tracks. Custom Tracks allows you to enter your own music into the game in the form of radio stations. You have the option to choose between the regular radio and custom tracks. To put them in you must have to use a program to convert in to gta files and then add them to your PSP memory card.
Most of the time is runs fine. You won't really be bothered by those small little freezes in the game that happens every once in a while. I guess is so the game could load on the PSP. It looks good graphically for PSP standards a achievement in the early days of the PSP. Yet you won't get some of little things, like the weather effects as much as you got it in GTA III.
This really is the first GTA game that has come to portables. Its has console standards and it's a must have for GTA fans since you wont be disappointed.
