WipEout Pure is an odd title. At first, I was put off by the handling and the lack of speed. But once I tried a few practice races and got accustomed to the weapons, it slowly got me hooked. The tournaments are nicely challenging, although a bit annoying when the same racers come in the same positions. The weapons, ranging from shields, to boosts to the awesome Quake are well done and eloquently balanced. The handling takes some getting used to but after a lot of practice, you'll nail every corner with glee. The music is fitting to the gorgeous futuristic tracks and even though I'm not a big fan of dance music, it proves to be quite good listening.
The best part of the game is that there's incentive to come back for more. There are gold medals up for grabs and you can get them on every mode, every level, every difficulty. And just when you've finished the whole game, there are plenty of packs available for download to keep you busy a little while longer. The multiplayer is also well done, offering game sharing and 8 player wireless and is very well done, if a tad jittery.
All in all, it's an accomplished racer that once you put in some effort and practice, you'll reap the benefits. Just don't get annoyed if it doesn't click the first time.
