I swore to myself after the disappointing Might and Magic VIII that unless New World did something to make the next game a substantially more compelling and fun experience, I would give up the series.
Well, unfortunately, I think I've reached that point. Might and Magic IX is relatively disappointing in every way, from the random and aimless quests to the crummy interface. While I did play it through to the end, I didn't find it anywhere near as fun as some of the earlier Might and Magics. And how exactly did the Lithtech engine get so ugly? Even Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, one of the very first games to use the Lithtech engine, looked far better. Let's not even get into how the 2D classics Might and Magic IV and V both look far better than Might and Magic IX!
The game feels tired and grows tiring, especially after you've heard your characters say "Worthless!" or "I can't use that!" several hundred times. And when the most complex model of interaction you have with the game world is "Click it and see if anything happens", well, it's not really that much of a game.
I'd personally recommend Wizardry 8 or something like Freedom Force instead.
