Seven Sorrows doesn't live up to its potential. Great devotion to graphics and scenery, but the release deadline must have hit before they finished fleshing out the details associated with past Gauntlet games. The storyline starts out well: an emperor trying to correct a crime against his 4 heroes after being tricked by his advisors for their own personal gain. This scenario, however, limits you to 1 of only 4 characters. Unlike its predecessors, there are no items to acquire, only special moves that max out about halfway through the game. You wind up with lots of treasure and nothing to spend it on. Each level consists of only 2-3 stages before reaching the boss, but no revisiting levels until you save and turn the game off. You can start from the opening stage of any level you've completed when you turn the game back on, but it means revisiting every stage already fought in between until you can finally continue forward. This game is proof that cutting production to meet deadlines can cost more than any penalty for missing it is worth.
