For fans of city building who want to experience beautiful graphics and a different yet satisfying economic model, this game is a must. While all of Rome/City Building fans eaglery await Caesar IV, this title (and the upcoming CivCity: Rome) are the perfect fixes. Glory of the Roman Empire is a satisfying play. The graphics are stunning and the game-play is different enough to make it interesting. As a long-time fan of the Impressions/Tilted Mill games, I found this one very fulfilling because it's a bit different than those games. There are enough civil challenges to keep you hopping and the military aspect, while watered down (and to me this is good as I like city builders w/just a touch of warfoare), is prevelant enough to give you the feeling of having to manage a little bit of everything.
The campaign is very long and very adept at guiding you through the game, but the game really sings in Challenge mode, where you are given a number of random challenges from Caesar and complete them on random maps. Your scores are then automatically uploaded to Haemimont's website where you can compare them with other players around the world. While not multi-player, it does give you a nice way to 'compete' against others. If Haemimont really supports this game w/any needed patches (low end systems experience some glitches) and -- more importantly -- more maps for both Freebuild and Challenge mode (or even another campaign or two), then this game could actually have some staying power. We'll have to wait and see how it stacks up against CivCity:Rome and the giant that will be Caesar IV, but either way, it is a great play and Haemimont deserves a LOT of credit for giving fans of the genre another quality game to play.
