Once more Capcom brings us more zombie filled survival horror scenarios in the new chapter in the Resident Evil series with Resident Evil 0 for the Game Cube. You play as Rebecca Chambers of the S.T.A.R.S team. When a team goes missing in the woods of Raccoon City you and your team members are sent out to investigate. To your horror you find that everyone is dead and the prisoner they were carrying has escaped. You come upon a mysterious train in the woods with all it's passengers dead inside. What is going on? Welcome to the nightmare.
Resident Evil 0 takes place before the first Resident Evil game for the PS. It still has that fixed camera angle, it still has those pre rendered backgrounds. It still comes equipped with those annoying messages of, 'Do you want to use the key?" and "Will you take the ammo?" There are still typewriters and ink ribbons and key items still give a white flash. Yup RE shows no change in it's change to the GC. The catch here is that you now control 2 characters; Rebecca and Billy (the escaped prisoner) as you lead them through the mansion sized train trying to escape and find clues to what happened to everyone. Throughout the game you can switch characters in order to complete puzzles or help out one another in situations. This isn't bad because if one character runs out of ammo or herbs you can trade or give the other character some items to help them out. There are some cool in game moments that will make you jump and there are some new enemies that will give some new strategy and approach on how to kill them.
Even though the whole controlling two characters thing is cool and a new twist on the RE games overall it feels like on giant escort mission and every gamer knows escort missions are no fun. What also sucks about this is that if either Rebecca or Billy die it's game over. I know ink ribbons and typewriters are to RE as steel chairs are to the WWE but they are annoying. The ink ribbon to typewriter location distances is ridiculous and it doesn't help that the train is about the size of the world. Another thing is yeah the camera blows as well, I mean after so many games I still love not knowing what I am shooting at or what is attacking me off screen.
Overall RE0 is like all the other RE games before it. Everything you have come to known and love about the series is still here. Taking control of 2 people is fun and adds some new strategy to the game. There are still those cheap scares and there are some freaky new enemies to encounter and kill. But the problem is that it's just like the other RE games. After a while all those things that remind of the other RE games just get annoying and in the way.
