To say first I was really disappointed in Star Fox Adventures, there was nothing fun about that game. I had high hopes when I heard about Star Fox Assault. When I finally saw the commercials and there was Arwing space battle like in the classic Star Fox 64. My initial thoughts were, "Yes! Finally what a Star Fox game should be." But to my dismay I should have left my high hopes with the commercials. The story is nothing great, Andros is destroyed but there is a new evil in space and it's up to Star Fox and crew to save it space once more.
Now there is a very short list of positives about this game. First of space battles in the Arwing is fun. It's just like Starfox 64 and the original for the Super Nintendo. There are tons of enemies to shoot on screen and it's always a joy to get to the end and face the boss. You know you'll get you're geek on when you fly through those gold and silver rings of a health boost. Secondly multiplayer is fun as well, you can battle up to 3 other friends (including your self) on a variety of maps. You can either stay on the ground and fight on foot or in the Landmaster tank or take it to the air in the Arwing.
Sadly that's really where the fun ends. As much fun as the space battles are they make up less than half of the game. Everything else is either on foot or in the tank and those are not fun. There is no variety in the missions you are always blowing some random thing up. Also the controls for the ground missions suck. The camera has a major problem of showing everything but the thing you want to focus on and let's just say Fox wasn't mean to walk on the ground. Thirdly someone needs to rip out Slippy's voice box and it doesn't help that your friend's AI sucks. Every 5 min you will hear their cries for help, well you know what too bad. Maybe they should help you every once in a while because I'm pretty sure after 5 missions of blowing up random stuff in un-interesting levels with no variety you are the one who could use the help
In the end stay away from this game. There are little to no redeeming qualities about it. Sure the Arwing battles are fun and multiplayer is good as well. But even those things don't make up from the rest of suck and god-awfulness that comes from this game. If you've read this review I don't need to list the negatives again. Please just avoid it and hope they make a better StarFox game.
