Aliens are about us with the release of Midways' Area 51. At the top-secret facility Area 51, something awful is happening underground. Genetic mutations, missing officers and even deeper government conspiracies plague the facility. You are apart of special unit to go down into Area 51 and locate missing officers but you are in for a bigger surprise.

Area 51 in all attempts is an average game. But it's a good type of average game. Area 51 is your basic FPS; there are tons of weapons to kill and tons of enemies to kill them with. You start off with a squad but thy don't matter (I wont say why), in the beginning they are very useful. Scattered around the levels there are documents that you can examine that will unlock secrets in the game ranging from cheats to movies. There are a lot of good in game moments that will make you cringe out of disgust or will make you jump with the games cheap scares. The game takes a huge turn when you actually get to become one of the infected alien/humans allowing you to run faster and do some cool moves. There are also some other nice twists in the game. One of the best things though is the way the game encompasses some of the hoax's and cover-ups, one of the levels is based on the site of the "Moon landing' hoax, which is really cool.

On the downside Area 51 is what it is, an average FPS. The enemy AI is alright it won't dazzle you but it's good enough to provide some good challenges, even with the tendency to run strait at you. The whole document scanning for game secrets is really annoying and requires too much time for you to do. You actually have to stop and look down at the document so its highlighted with a box before you scan. There are some platforming elements that consist of you jumping up and over boxes and steel beams, but they are annoying and seem kind of there to break up the basic game play.

Overall Area 51 isn't a bad FPS. There are enough weapons and bad guys to kill them with. There are some cool in game moments and it has it's own set of twists that will keep the story interesting. Though the platform elements are "in the way" and the document scanning is tedious and a waste of time. This game isn't a must buy but you shouldn't ignore it. If you like aliens and shooters than you will like this game. If not pick it up and give it a try.
