Square Enix has brought us a new RPG for us to delve into, this time it comes in the form of Radiata Stories for the PS2. You are a young boy named Jack who has joined the Templar Knights. But when your group is disbanded you find your self searching the town for work. But outside of your town a war is about rage between the humans and fairies, which side will you take.
Radiata Stories is a game that could have been so much better but falls directly in the middle. The game once you began to play is beautiful, it's pretty realistic and there are a lot of nice little touches in the environment you wander through. All the characters in the game are quirky and provide a sense of humor and personality. One of the biggest things in the game are the battles. They are done in real time and there is some depth to the combo system and special attacks that can be performed. Another big thing and probably the best thing about the game is the 175 characters you can recruit to your party. That's right 175, which can lead to some strategy on who you want to bring on your quests. Another nice thing is that eventually you can choose between the human or non-human side in the story.
What really brings the game down is the slow paced story. It can take you a couple of hours or even days to really get into what's going on. It also would have been nicer if the story were a little better and not so clichéd. Also it's nice that you can recruit so many characters but you may miss a lot if you don't complete certain tasks in a certain time and that may frustrate some people. One small problem but easily becomes annoying is where the talk and kick buttons are placed, they really should have been switched. You will find your self many times going to talk to someone and end up kicking them instead, or go to open a door and end up kicking it.
While Radiata Stories has it's high points, like it's beauty, good battle system, 175 characters to recruit and lots of side quests. It's things like mildly boring story, slow paced and simple annoying things like button placements bring the game down from being something more.
