Many people that I talk to say that they have never even played this installment of the Mario Kart series. As a result, when "Mario Kart" is brought up in conversation, people usually think of the Nintendo 64 version. But, they should be thinking of this one as well, since its impact on video gaming, particularly on the racing genre, was of much more importance than the N64 game.
Super Mario Kart was the original Mario Kart and it is a pure classic that set the stage for the other games in the series. I remember playing this when it came out on the SNES (when I was in second grade) thinking it was the coolest game around. It is really hard to find anything wrong with this game. It provided challenge, interesting race tracks, a whole arsenal of humorous weapons, good graphics for its time of release, and the charm of the Mario Series packed all into one experience. This is all not to mention the fact that it had the coolest race track in video gaming history... the barrier-less Rainbow Road!
I am not going to say that this game is better or worse than Mario Kart 64, since they are both great games. But, I do feel that Super Mario Kart deserves more credit than it gets, and it is a must-have for any retro gamer. Perfect 10!
