Oh man, Guitar Hero II. I'd never thought I'd actually even think of buying this game... and I didn't. My roomate did, and completely loved it and stole my PS2. So, how could I not play it? After getting the massive hand cramps, though, I must say that game is well worth the seventy dollars (and many lost PS2 hours) dropped for the game and the controller.
Well, let's begin with the basics: You have this speical controller, and guess what it is? It's just like a guitar, go figure. Anyway, from there on it's like DDR for your hands: You press the colored buttons in coordination with the screen's, uh, colors. It's really easy... at first. As you move up the song list and difficulties, it can quickly lead to carpel tunnel in a year from now.
To say to least, this game is ADDICTING. There are a ton of songs and other goodies to unlock, making the prefectionist in everyone try to get a five-star in everything (which can be impossible for some songs) to get the cash. Also, the two player mode is great for mastas and n00bs alike, equaling out the playing field so that everyone can have a chance to win.
Somethimes, however, the difficulty of the songs seems to be out of order. For example, the sone in the first playlist, Surrender, is surprizeingly difficult in Medium difficulty and up. Usually, that song is harder then many of the songs you'll come into for at least 2 full songsets afterwards. This, obviously, can lead to a lot of frustration. Also, coming from I guess, a girl, the guitar can be brutal to those with smaller hands. Sometimes, it's just not possible to move up and down the damned controller that quickly when you hand is barely big enough to confortably reach the blue button...
In the end, though, if you like rhythm games, or just love to rock, you should pick up Guitar Hero II. Hey, at least it'll give your feet a break from all that DDR...
Oh, as a last little side-note, you can actually play the Guitar Hero games using a normal PS2 controller, but the way is VERY convoluted and is not recommended, by all means.
