I haven't played an rpg since FFVII and I haven't played a PC rpg in ages. So I asked all my role playing friends what game I should play to get the best rpg experience, and most everyone pointed me to Baldur's Gate II. The practically unanimous favorite was not a bad choice. I enjoy this game immensely.
After taking a crash-course in the D&D universe, I realized that this game is HUGE. You should never be without stuff to do or tasks to complete. BG2 is well ordered and much more free form than I expected. You don't really feel too pressured to go do one all-important task, but instead, you are faced with many opportunities to involve yourself in the game world with your party members.
The graphics and sound are pretty sweet and really add to the mood of the game. Unfortunately, when many effects are shown onscreen, it tends to slow down the framerate. They do look nice though.
On the bad end of things, everything that you do ends up being an epic saga. There aren't that many quick and easy tasks. All require planning and deliberation. Sometimes, I wished I could just march into a dungeon and start whipping up on orcs. Unfortunately, I have never really been able to feel superior to anything in the game world.
Overall, this is a great game. I suggest marking out a large block of time and trying it out if you haven't done so already.
