Overall: A (This game reeks of SCI-FI!!  Gamecube's best game.  I have never played any of the previous Metroid games, so this is new to me.  The fact that this game is so rich in SCI-FI environment, polished, huge, engrossing, graphically innovating, and most importantly, FUN to play, the overall sum of the parts...listed below...adds up to a pure A from me!)

Control: B- (While the controls are tuned nicely and every button is used, I am annoyed that I can't customize them!  Also, why not classic FPS dual analog control? The combination of using the R button to allow up and down movement and the L button to lock targets, while having to rapidly press A button to fire is a recipe for SORE stressed hand muscles in Boss battles.  Once you master the controls, however, you will learn to love them (and not get sore hands) and understand why they are how they are.  It is just too bad it had to be set up in a way that makes it take so long!

Graphics: A- (Some bllluuurrrsss up close, but other than that, an overall a finely polished effort.  Utilizes HDTV!  Good job, I wish more games would do this!  Some simply great effects with water, mist, goo, etc.  on visor screen.  I particularly like the water running down the helmet shield, which looks so real, like water on a car windshield!)

Sound: A- (Dark, eerie, SCI-FI funky music (kinda sounds like it came out of X-Files.  Surround sound!)

Gameplay: A (Lots to do!  I haven't figured it all out.  I like the idea and mystery of not much info being provided and being forced to jump into it and learn as you go.  Screen layout is handy and well organized.  Love the scanning and learning aspect.  And video game makers take note of this: BRAVO (and I do mean Bravo!) for telling the story THROUGH the gameplay.  APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE!!!!) The more I play this game, the more I enjoy it.  But one LARGE complaint...some bosses are WAY TOO HARD!  It gets frustrating to do that same battle over and over until you get it.)

Comments:
1.  If you are looking for Halo on the Gamecube (as I heard said on some TV review show???) this is really a different game and shouldn't be compared to Halo.  It is easily the best game for the Ninetendo Gamecube (as Halo is the best game for the XBOX)...also they are both SCI-FI, beyond that, don't try to compare them!  But if you want to know which game is my favorite, Halo easily is a more played game (because of Co-op and multiplayer)
2.  It is really too bad that this game couldn't have been made for the XBOX (I realize it is a Ninetendo game and they would never do such a thing).  I think with the XBOX hard drive in place, some of the backtracking could be eliminated.  Also, the XBOX dual analog controllers are far superior to the Gamecubes.  I think Retro Studios could have utilized them and provided some controller options.  Especially with the extra press down buttons on the analogs.  Oh well!

3.  Samus is a girl?? Interesting?
4.  The first boss battle was pretty stupid.  They get much better.  Just an FYI...A few boss battles are frustratingly hard.
5.  No Multiplayer.  But this game isn't about Multiplayer.
6.  Backtracking is a negative...To clarify, I don't mind running back through areas so much, but it needs to be logical.  While I can rationalize some creatures returning, plants regrowing, etc....I can't rationalize boxes, gun turrets, and bosses, etc, magically being restored!
