Having never been able to master the arcade version of the Star Wars Racer game, I wasn't sure that I'd be too crazy about playing this one. But with the PS2 controller, things are much easier, and maybe too easy. The control scheme is very intuitive and can be mastered after just one race.
But the more impressive aspect is definitely the races themselves. Set in spectacular tracks with great lighting and physics, and with highly detailed vehicles, the game is definitely a sight to see. When it's not blurring past you, that is.
The most noticeable thing about this game is it's amazing ability to portray the effect of speed. Much like the sequence in The Phantom Menace, the game takes sheer velocity nearly over the top during the races. It's not like other racing games in that you can always know the path you must follow. Every track is loaded with shortcuts, secret paths, and alternative routes, making for a sometimes gripping, heart-pounding experience.
However, like most other racing games, there are a limited number of tracks, but with a good number of vehicles to use and racers to race against, there's much more variety to the gameplay than would appear.
