Overall score on pook's 100-point system (TM): 93, or just 9. It's hard to judge this game properly after years since playing it, but it's simply a classic. At the time I felt that while the graphics were excellent it could use some more variety of backgrounds (solved in the sequel), and the overworld was nearly non-existant, but it's a small complaint.
-the breakdown-
Graphics (25/30, judged by era)- Great 2d graphics for the day. High level of polish and animation, nice mood. you can tell the quality of the game by buying the Hellfire expansion which was not nearly up to snuff.
Sound- FX/Voice (9/10) Excellent recorded sound fx help immerse you in the game.
Sound- Music (10/10) Not a ton of tunes but brilliantly composed. The main theme is classic. Uleman (sp) the composer is probably the best US composer working today, mixing electronic sounds with acoustic and percussion instruments masterfully.
Gameplay- Length/Lastability (15/15) Great 1-player campaign and free online play make this a real value. I know people that were playing this game til the day the sequel came out. I spent many great and memorable hours with this game.
Gameplay- Story (4/5) Not a bad story at all. You actually feel like you're listening to Sean Connery tell you the story. You're not, but you feel like you are.
Gameplay- Game Design (30/30) Such a simple overall concept, but so masterfully executed that the game is a blast and a classic. Who would've thought you could have so much fun just clicking a mouse button over and over and over and over. Excellent online play, and good balancing. Truly a complete package of a game.
Final Thoughts- A classic. Perhaps not a necessary play these days as a result of the sequel making it obsolete, but that's a little unfortunate cause it's great in its own right.
