Overall score on pook's 100-point system (TM): 93, or just 9. Blizzard proves that while it takes forever, it has the golden touch.
-the breakdown-
Graphics (25/30, judged by era)- While the game certainly lived up to improving on the original's game engine, it was awhile in coming, and when it came though it was incredible in animations and even just in the amount of visual customization to your character, it already seemed a little dated by the time it was released, after many delays. That said, it still showed an incredible amount of polish.
Sound- FX/Voice (9/10) Excellent recorded sound fx help immerse you in the game.
Sound- Music (10/10) A continuation of the first game's style, once again brilliantly composed. A much longer soundtrack, and with more variety as the game now progressed through different locales.
Gameplay- Length/Lastability (15/15) Next to Everquest, this game probably is the most crack-like. I easily got my money's worth out of this game, and you will too. Many people poured way more time into this than even the first game. I've seen people spend hundreds of hours if not over a thousand on this game. No kidding.
Gameplay- Story (4/5) Similar in vein to the Diablo story, primarily told through NPCs (although there are more of them now). It's well told, and almost decently voice acted.
Gameplay- Game Design (30/30) Takes everything about the first game and polishes it to diamond-like quality. Without needing to reinvent a very well-designed original wheel, they took and expanded every aspect of the original from the enemies to the levels, to the character classes, to the TONS of items and weapons that can be found. Toss in the Cow Level and you have a lesson in perfection.
Final Thoughts- A classic. This game still holds its own against the onslaught of newcomers since its release, even amid the proliferation of 3d titles. If you haven't played this game, it's well worth your time. Just be sure you have LOTS of time.
