Having just finished playing Far Cry, I can honestly say that it has been the most amazing first-person shooter experience I have ever had! It's the type of game that sucks you in with its excellent game-play and unique situations, so much so that you'll want to forego other aspects of your life (say wife, kids and possibly work) in order to get through to the end of the adventure.
The story revolves around one Jack Carver who, while taking a client on a boat-cruise of neighboring islands, finds himself wrapped up in the mystery surrounding scientific experiments that are being conducted on the island. There are a number of people who want to see Jack dead (both human and otherwise) who make Jack's survival a tough act indeed.
The one weak-point of the game is possibly its story (it's fairly contrived) but that didn't really take away from the experience for me. The absolutely stunning graphics, amazing sound (including the dialog, music and sound effects) and excellent mission scenarios make this my favourite FPS ever! Now I've got to confess that I was running this on a pretty high-end machine (dual P4 3.2GHz, ATI X850) and I know that I was privileged to see more detail than a friend of mine who played it on a slower machine (you see more wildlife including fish, birds, dragonflies, fireflies and the like) but the graphics and audio just complement what is already an incredibly outstanding game!
Far Cry includes multiplayer options (which I'm not much into) and a wide range of difficultly levels to play the game at. One disappointment for me was the lack of any public "mods" for the game – I would have thought that the mod community would have gone nuts over this title like they have done for Half Life, but that's apparently not the case. As well, even though there are XBox-related games available there doesn't seem to be any indication of a sequel or add-on pack. Far Cry is screaming for a sequel and I hope that we will eventually see one or more available. Perhaps not a lot of people picked up this title and that's definitely a shame.
So if you're a fan of first-person shooters at all then just quit reading this review and find yourself a copy at your local videogame bargain bin. It's truly an amazing game that is a joy to play from beginning to end!
