At first I was reluctant to pick up Gauntlet - Dark Legacy because of some mediocre press and reviews it received. However, being a fan of Gauntlet in the arcades, I decided to give it a go and I'm very happy I did!
In general, Dark Legacy is just a mindless romp through a variety of stereotypical worlds, but it's a fun romp none-the-less and one that kept me entertained for the 18 hours it took me to finish the game. I didn't find it a difficult quest, but it did take some time to make it through the worlds. For those of you unfamiliar with the world of Gauntlet, you choose your character (from 6 characters available at the start although more become available through completing bonus levels in the game) and hack and slash your way through deserts, crypts, snowscapes and other similar environments. Monsters come out in droves from numerous "generators" on each level and you gather keys, food, potions, crystals, runes, legendary items and shards along the way to battling a boss creature on each level. There is no role-playing involved - simply use brute force (and occasional strategy) to make it through to the next level and eventually the end of the game.
Gauntlet doesn't bring much new to the table but the graphics and audio are well done, the levels interesting and there's something therapeutic about bashing your way to the end of a level. All in all it's just plain fun!
Pick this one up in the bargain bin if you get a chance!
