Simply put, Supreme Chairman Drek needs a new homeworld. Having helped pollute his, he has found that the best way to do this is to take climates, trees, water, etc. from other planets in order to put them on his new homeworld. One of those world's happens to be inhabited by a young hero named Ratchett, perhaps with his sidekick Clank they can stop the evil aims of Drek and save Ratchet's planet as well as the rest of the universe.
This game, released a few years back marks the entry of yet another Naughty Dog Inspired platform/action game for the PS2. Its available for 19.99 as one of Sony's Greatest hits and it is this version that I am now reviewing.
The gameplay for a game like this is really everything. It features the platform staples of jumping puzzles, grappling hook jumping puzzles, conveyor belts and even fun trying to maneuver on ice. From the jumping, to the variety of weapons and gadgets, this game features perhaps the best gameplay I have seen in a game in ages. The ability to turn enemies into chickens with the Morph Ray, to utilizing Clank with a helicopter and jetpack attachments which help you jet around the board. The meat of this game is in its play and I am pleased to says its nearly perfect.
Graphically, even for an "older" PS2 game, it is a rather pretty game. The variety of enemy types is nice as is the various environments in which you visit in your ship. This game very much has graphics comparable to Jak and Daxter and Crash bandicoot, which is not bad company to keep at all. It manages to maintain a fairly stable framerate and as such doesn't detract from the game.
The sounds of this game are about what you would expect. the real treasure in this game is with the dialogue and sound effects of the game. Chairman Drek and Quark provide large amounts of funny moments and great dialogue. The weapons also provide decent sound effects for the game, which also has a stable if not overpowering soundtrack for this game.
This game does not contain any multiplayer features, and as such it will not be rated in this area.
Among the host of extras in this game are the various skill points you are able to earn by a variety of means, such as destroying 10 vehicles. There are also a number of golden bolts hidden throughout the various game levels, some easy to find, other you will be needing your map attachment to figure out how to get to them. The ability to replay the game's various cutscenes is the true gem here as it featured some rather funny moments.
I completed this game in 15 hours after about a week of consistent gameplay. It was not a terrible difficult game as a whole, but certain parts required numerous deaths on my part and frustration as well. It does feature a great story with some endearing characters, especially the villains Drek and Captain Quark. Those last two in particular steal the show at times. The best part of this game, aside from gameplay, is the large amounts of humor present within it, often subtle to see, but nearly always present within the game.
