Thank goodness for Sega. If it weren't for them, innovation in the video game industry would probably move along at a snail's pace. Granted, many of their more "avant-garde" titles (like Seaman, or Space Channel 5) only cater to a select audience, as evidenvced by the company's eventual failure in the console industry. However, as a third party developer, they should be able to continue to bring us exciting and unique titles for years to come.
One of their most recent examples is the game called Super Monkey Ball. In this game, you play as a monkey in an oversized Hamster ball. In the game's regular play mode, your job is to simply get to the end of the map. In an interesting twist, you don't control the monkey, but rather you tilt the entire level with the analog stick in order to move your monkey towards the finish line.
However, this main mode is only a small part of the game. Eventually you will be able to play six, count 'em, SIX multi-player mini games. Now, you will have to unlock three of them by playing through the main game, but these games make Monkey Ball ideal for any gaming get-together. These are the games: Monkey Bowling, Monkey Golf, Monkey Racing, Monkey Fight, Monkey Target, and Monkey Billiards.
All you need to know about Monkey Ball is that, unlike some of Sega's games, it's got something for everyone. Even if you don't like the main game, the mini games are enough to keep you and your friends busy for hours on end.
This game proves that games can have both good single player AND multi player modes. I can't help but wonder why other games don't include something for you to do with your friends. After all, this game makes it look easy.
