I am a day late and a dollar short. I am sure its the same with many of you, there is only so much money to go around. I wish I had spent my hard earned dollars on Far Cry much sooner than I did.
Oh Doom 3 was most impressive in the lighting department but hey its Doom play to the core. Half-Life 2 was beautiful but still just an updated Half-Life. Then Call of Duty and the expansion, well I am a WWII buff.
Then I finally get Far Cry and nearly cried when I stood in the tropical sun looking at all the vegetation, the birds flying the fish in the water, the reflections on the water.
I must be honest I was a tad disapointed with the "mutants on a rampage" that is getting old, whether from Hell, aliens from another dimension, ghosts in the machine whatever.
What impressed me is the AI. There is a downside to the AI they are a little too keen. To balance against that you have to find a good place to hide and wait they will eventually loose track of you. I have had them walk no more than 10 feet from me without finding me.
The Trygens are another matter. The mindless mutants. A certain class of Trygens is pretty darn hard to kill and they do not possess any intelligence.
Being able to snipe, hide in the bushes and move about is a big boost to your health. The mercs will go to the place you sniped from. Be careful if there are many they come from all directions keep your ears open and you should hear them as they approach.
Graphically the game is stunning. Excellent water effects on par with HL2 and the bump mapping IMO is superior to Doom 3.
I vote for being the best shooter to date. Well excluding my soft spot for the WWII variety. Being born in the days when WWII was still glorified I am nostaglic for that era.
