Grandia, a game ported from the Sega Saturn, proves that Game Arts can sure tell an entertaining story.
The graphics in this game are good, but not anything special. In the age of post-Final Fantasy 7, Grandia is not a graphical powerhouse. Nor is the music spectacular, or the characters unique (Justin, the explorer, Sue, the friend-girl, Feena, the adventuress, the requisite man-beast, etc.). However, one aspect of the RPG experience Grandia excels at is the battle. Grandia's pseudo real time, turn based battle system is spectacular. It's just plain fun, and that's rare in a RPG. Another positive aspect of the game is the evolving story. Full of RPG cliches, yet solidly entertaining. And this can be said of the whole game. Not spectacular (save the battle engine), but solid. Though not as polished and prettied up like the Final Fantasies of the world, Grandia delivers a solid RPG experience.
