Psygnosis, the makers of Colony Wars, is often known for making games that impress graphically, yet fall short in the gameplay department. CW does show some effort on Psygnosis' part in creating a game with some depth but in the end, it is little more than a very nice looking, yet shallow, shooter. Initiating a mission involves no entering of coordinates or choosing an ordinance. You're simply given a particular ship, a set of objectives and off you go! Controlling your fighter is simple and straightforward. The hud is easy to read and locating the enemy on radar isn't a problem. Here's my problem with CW. You're never really in any danger of getting blown out of the sky by the enemy fighters. Sure, they'll get lucky and hit you every now and then but a simple juke here and a boost of speed there and you're pretty safe. Most of the times, you'll fail a mission because time limits, not because of enemy pilot skills. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy this game because I did. The graphics are excellent for the PSX and the loud, booming explosions are especially satisfying, but as a whole CW is a fairly simple space shooter and should not be confused with more sophisticated simulations like Tie Fighter or Freespace.
