THE GOOD: The Crytech engine on which Far Cry runs on clearly excels at creating beautiful, lush, expansive outdoor environments. That's not to say the indoor levels are 2nd rate though, they aren't. If you have the machine though, you'll marvel at the extraordinary view distance that FC can render. Also worth noting regarding FC's attention to detail are the ambient life forms that can be observed in FC - flocks of birds, schools of fish, a stray wild pig here and there serve to make FC's world all the more immersive. Vehicles play a huge and integral part of the game. Few fps have succeeded in implementing vehicles in a sensible manner, but like Halo, FC does a wonderful job of making vehicles a part of the game and not a mere distraction or gimmick. Straightforward to control(if a bit bouncy) FC's vehicles are for the most part fun to operate and very responsive.
THE BAD: The voice-acting and story are not going to win any awards. Some lines of dialogue are clearly humorous in nature but some come across as humorous for the wrong reasons. Most of the enemy units aren't as innovative or creative as they could be, pretty standard fare for sci-fi fps.
OVERALL: FC came out of nowhere to score a homerun. It's brilliant engine, polished design and gameplay, and highly interactive environment stunned players waiting for heavyweights like Half-Life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Doom III. I also guess I'm so fond of FC because it came from a developer that we never heard of, which proves that talent and ambition hasn't been totally bought up by giant, creativity-sapping corporations.
