Don't believe the hype, this game is awful. I give it a 3.
Here are the good points:
- amazing textures
- good sound with a pro-logic II setup
- game supports progressive scan
- camera is never a hindrance to gameplay
Here are the many bad parts:
The game never grips me. The story is very average - hell its main competitor, Resident Evil (RE), has a much better plot.
The insanity effects are OK, but they hardly ever scare you. You know that they are trying to trick you. I can think of many other ways that they might've tricked gamers, but they only tricked me twice in 16 hours of gameplay. They shouldn't have marketed the insanity effects so much. That people would've been fooled better.
The puzzles are VERY subpar. RE is much more difficult in this regard. Puzzles should be a part of this game because...
The action is horrible. Every creature is very easy to beat, and I think I only counted 6 total uniquecreatures to fight in the game (including the two bosses).
The environments are very lame too. I mean they have a freaking DVD to fill (1.5GB) and they make the player stick to 3 environments over and over. I like exploring new areas and discovering new secrets and there were neither in this paltry game. The game gets sooooo repetitive: go to area 1 in chapter 1, area 2 in chapter 2, area in chapter 3, wash, rinse, repeat. Very little is added for the entire game to any of these areas, despite the fact that you revisit them 3 times each!
Btw - this is a horror game? There is very little about this game that was scary.
The graphics are very subpar beyond some nice texturing effects. Player models are low-polygon and the environments are uninspired.
Many sites state the game has 40 hours of gameplay. Well, thankfully it doesn't or it wouldn't be legal in the U.S. because that would be cruel and unusual punishment. The game truly provides about 15-20 hours of gameplay. Why anyone would repeat this torture is beyond me.
In the end, Nintendo should drop Silicon Knights because they don't know how to make a good game. Hopefully Metroid won't disappoint like this game.
