more of a RTS than true RPG this is the final fantasy game that deviates from all others, and in a good way.
You can actually move around and use a 3D "board" to play a sort of RPG/RTS chess match with your opponents. Unlike most RPGs where you line up and take turns, you will be constantly moving your characters around and trying to outwit the CPU AI
Graphics, well 2D sprites on top of a floating 3D squared chess board are a little odd to say the least, but it works fine for the game. Reminds me a lot of SNES graphics which at the time of release is what you might expect for such a large RPG
Combat is as deep as you want it to be, you can customize almost any character from the start, and later on you get special characters that are clearly powerful enough in certain areas that deviating from the jobs they have isnt necessary
Monster taming, special levels, tons of weapon/item/armour combos and a deep dark story that twists and turns at every availible point.
Trust me when I say clearly this is the best Final Fantasy around for either the PSX or PS2
that is unless you prefer lots of CGI and turn based random static battles where you line up like 1st graders lining up for recess :)
