The controls are a little loose but the framerate is what hurts the gameplay the most. Aiming is a chore and dying cheap deaths is common. There are only a limited amount of weapons but this is offset by different bullet types.
The control is very similar to Perfect Dark for the N64 and unfortunately so are the graphics. PD64 was balanced for this sloppy control, and NOLF was balanced for the PC mouse controls, which makes NOLF harder and more frustrating than it should be.
The voices are fantastic, but sound effects are also N64-ish.
Thankfully the level design is inspired and almost makes up for the frustrating controls and choppy graphics. The level design and missions keep you playing, despite the hyper annoying stealth levels which are basically "try and die" or "forget this stealth nonsense, I will run and gun"
Occasionally I was baffled as to how to avoid setting off alarms and would spend and hour or so replaying the same 10 minute scene in an attempt to discover how to not set off the alarm.
Even with the glaring flaws, NOLF is still fun, but only if you can tolerate problems like the inconsitent framerate of Perfect Dark
PC FPS player perfectionists should steer clear. NOLF is much better for the PC in every aspect.
However console gamers with patience and a love of single player FPS should at least rent it.
