Madden gets better every year. But there are still major issues that go unfixed.
While I still think it is a great game, hence the 9 these issues really do grate on the nerves.
For instance
1. Blatantly stale commentary. Madden sounds like he spent 10 minutes recording 3-4 new lines and called it a day. Poor Al Michaels sounds like they made him do all the work reading.
And that is the problem, it sounds like they are both reading, not calling a game.
2. Menu screens, ok what is with the poor unintuative layout. Navigating menus is a laborious task of guessing game. Guess what the designer was thinking when he made this piss poor menu?
3. Music and intro screens. Madden 2001 had the amazing Xzibit and some other rappers with very cool fade in fade out animations of individual players doing end zone dances, or spin moves, or salutes etc... it had charm.
Now we have generic "pop" music and stylized cut scenes. It lacks heart and soul.
4. Blocking AI is still abysmal, the defense AI can run straight past a running back who should pick him up, but seems to not see him, every time.
Run blocking is equally as bad as blockers run right past unblocked defensemen looking for someone else.
5. Franchise mode is barely improved. interface is still a straight menu unlike NFl2k3 and renogitiating contracts in unrealistic. Over payed vets demand too high a salary even if they are a free agent and sitting out the whole season.
Madden is still the best this year, but only because Sega couldnt quite get the running and passing game up to speed.
lets hope next year they concentrate on AI and add more animations.
After playing a ton of NCAA2003 and maddens 2003 , maddens doesnt seem to have that many more animations. By comparison NFL2k3 has 2-3X as many animations as madden
