So what do you get when you take the most hyped RPG ever and put it on the PS2 all by itself with no competetion? Sales! Well considering the only other RPG that was out when this was released was SHadow Hearts did you really expect a GREAT GAME? I did, but Square got lazy. instead of bringing out a game that had the potential to be a masterpiece they gave us an average story driven game with an above average battle system.
I admit at first glance Final Fantasy X (FFX for the rest of the review) looks like it is going to be an instant classic. Hell it even plays like it's going to be a great game. You are shown an amazing cutscene and take part in a mini boss battle within the first 15 minutes. Then it goes down hill....
After the shock of the beautiful graphics and new battle system ware off they make things complicated with, what seems like, 80 page tutorials to explain a simplistic combat system and a boring and simplistic sphere grid. Then instead of leveling up you use a damn sphere grid that forces you to do more battling then really neccessary just so you can get the proper spheres to advance your skills. Sounds boring and tedious? It is. As a matter of fact I couldn't find one thing that made this game different from other RPGs besides the sphere grid and graphics. This is definately, In my opinion, the worst of the Final Fantasies. FFX is NOT a must have and is NOT the best RPG ever, let alone the best on PS2. This game might've been more amazing had it been released as FF7 as a PS game.
