A no-brainer shoot em up, nothing more and nothing less. Good, but could have been oh so much more !
My biggest complaint is on the " story " modes you are given a mission, seemingly to achieve, yet you can ignore this and go on a killing spree and still finish the level....so what is the point of giving you the mission in the first place ?
For example on the Hoth level, playing as the Empire, you are asked to destory the rebels generator, yet you can leave it in one piece and finish the level....why ?
The lack of customising the game modes or gameplay do really frustrate you.
The game can be played in third or first views, the characters move slowly and there is very litle you can do to customise the game modes or characters, for instance wookies only carry crossbows, you don't have a choice to select weapons for the characters, they all have indivisual guns sets. For example if you wanted a stormtrooper with a bazooka type weapon, then tough, select the one character that uses it, it can really put your off if your favourite guy / droid from the film if he is stuck with a weapon you don't like using.
The idea of the game is to kill all the enemy, thats it ! Its just like a deathmatch game. You start from certain spawn points / bases, take over the oppositions bases to allow yourself to start closer to the action. Each side starts with varying amount of troops, some bases may have vehicles to use, however whilst speeder bikes and tanks are easy to use, x-wings and tie fighter take a lot to get use to and you always feel as if you should be on the ground mopping up troops and not fighting against the badly designed air/space craft controls.
The levels are awesome, just like the films and are set out accordingly. The amount of troops on screen at once is very impressive, stand still ( without dying ) and pan around, there are blaster shots flying everywhere. The CPU guys, on both sides, use the available vehicles and will take over bases, you feel part of a team and not just taking on an army, single hand, in the style of Rambo.
You do get very limited commands for your troops, for instance, hold position and follow me, the problem is they rarely every do !
It beats games like Timesplitters hands down in terms overall action, but one of Timesplitters' many game modes is the entire basis for the style of gameplay in Star Wars !
Try before you buy, its good for an arcade style quick fix but lacks any long term depth.
